COVID-19 rising as leading cause of death

SARS-CoVA 2 is now the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States this year. Heart disease and all cancer deaths still exceed the number of Coronavirus deaths. What is frustrating about this is that some Americans feel that this is not a big deal and that we are all overreacting. I was just so sad at a Facebook post the other day shared by one of my friends. I will post the picture of it in the comments section. In it, there was a meme about the number of positive tests, negative tests, and the risk of any American dying was about .04 % or something so infinitesimal that this was Much Ado About Nothing. At least they reported accurately that the death rate from people infected was around 3%. As I’ve said before 3% is a monster! The annual flu season kills 50,000 people a year and it infects between 10-40 million/year. Here we are with just 5 million infections and 170,000 deaths.
This is a big deal.
As a gastroenterologist, I spend my career trying to prevent colon cancer. Colon cancer kills just 50,000 people a year. The number one cause of cancer deaths, lung cancer, kills about 135,000 people a year. Coronavirus has already exceeded those. This is a big deal.
Compare this pandemic to wars. Only World War II and the Civil War (over 400,000 and over 600,000) top this pandemic in numbers of deaths. World War I, the Vietnam War, Korea, of course, the US Revolutionary War pale in comparison to this. Big deal.
So out of respect for those 170,000 dead Americans so far who gave their last full measure, just like you would respect the lives lost on the planes or the Twin Towers during 9/11, please don’t post a meme on your Facebook Page about how minimally this is affecting Americans and what a not Big Deal this is.
