Increase in COVID-19 cases

The Fall Surge (The Third Wave)

The Fall Surge is upon us. It has arrived by all telling. We are early in it’s course and there is opportunity for mitigation. The 1918 Pandemic of the Spanish flu also had 3 waves. The Spring, the Fall, and the Winter waves of 1918. The Winter of 1918 saw the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 th month, November 11, 1918. So then, world wide, there was a whole mess of people movement. American soldiers returned from Europe on crowded boats then sprinkled themselves into the populace. The H1N1 influenza virus hung it’s head out the window like my dog, Orbit, taking a joy ride. It spread like wildfire.

So here we are October 2020, and we are sick of the pandemic. We are tired of being cooped up. Tired of online schooling. Missing our relatives. But glad to have an excuse not to see that ONE friend. “Oh, gosh, you know we’d love to….but, you know, the Pandemic and all…”. We’re on the move again as a human race all around the world. School, work, life. There is the beginnings of a rush-hour again in Austin, TX.

With people movement, there is viral movement. You could say the pandemic is going viral. The thing can’t swim or fly, it gets carried on people. So here we go with the Fall Surge.

Why I am more optimistic about our chances than those in 1918 are for multiple reasons. They didn’t have as many people masked as we do. There wasn’t a hand sanitizer station on every street corner as there is now. And the first influenza vaccine wasn’t available until 1933. That was 15 years after the pandemic was over.

The people movement is on a humanity level and I am not certain we can curtail that. However, we can and ought to double down on our efforts to wear our masks, don’t pass that sanitizer station, and be careful about large gatherings.
We do have impact with our actions.
